the vertebrate nervous system is further subdivided into two main parts: the central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord. it consists of the ganglia, with large neurons in the ventral part, and a central nerve ring of smaller neurons, with posterior plexuses and anterior commissures. the lateral ganglia, in which nerve fibres are distributed in a gridwork, are the major subdivisions of the brain. the peripheral nervous system is the part of the vertebrate body that extends beyond the central nervous system, and includes the sensory and motor nerves.
in a cross-section of an adult animal, the main ganglia may be seen in a row from the head down the trunk. the ganglia do not fuse together to form a continuous tube. the individual ganglia in the trunk are usually the size of the corresponding ganglion in the head, although they may be a little smaller. however, in the widest part of the trunk, at the level of the most posterior somites, they are usually considerably larger than in the head. the lateral ganglia are usually on one side only.

the aim of this thesis is to investigate the reproductive ecology of the red-legged frogs genus pelophylax from europe, and to evaluate the influence of temperature on the phenology of metamorphosis and gonad maturation. the red-legged frog is an endangered amphibian species in central europe. the source of its name comes from the thick red coloration of the skin of these animals. pelophylaxes are divided into two subgenera, pelophylax and calotrophon. the genera include 10 species in central europe, and populations are extremely susceptible to environmental changes. the species studied in this work is the pelophylax lessonae. this species occurs in the adriatic area, from italy to croatia, and there are records from the balkan peninsula and northeastern turkey. this is an anadromous species, with larvae and adults distributed in the same habitat.
as part of an effort to obtain data necessary to support the designation of the greater miami river (miami valley) as a wild, scenic and recreational river, the u.s. fish and wildlife service (usfws) in conjunction with the miami-dade county department of environmental resources management (mdc’s dep) and the florida fish and wildlife conservation commission (fwc) collected 2,000 observations of wildlife and 1,675 invertebrate observations from 2003 to 2006 as part of the greater miami river fish and benthic macroinvertebrate monitoring program (gmrf-mpmp). this paper presents the first effort of statistical analysis of the invertebrate data collected by the gmrf-mpmp. the data set contained seven species groups that were identified in the gmrf-mpmp and the remaining population for each identified species is presented.
