A liquid crystal display device of the type as described above has such a disadvantage that the luminance of an image is reduced to a substantial extent by the occurrence of an image reversal phenomenon, in which the image is reversed in the course of several hours or several days even when the surface of the device is made bright. Particularly, a liquid crystal display device that utilizes a color filter made from a resin or the like is affected by this disadvantage.
As a method for solving the problem due to the image reversal phenomenon, a method has been proposed in which a cholesteric liquid crystal material is employed as a material for a liquid crystal layer and a chiral agent having a particular structural configuration is added to a cholesteric liquid crystal material to improve the viscosity of the liquid crystal layer, thereby controlling the wavelength of selective reflection of the cholesteric liquid crystal material to prevent occurrence of the image reversal phenomenon.
