True fantasy RPG fans will remember the golden era of MMOs that took place in the early 2000’s, in which the likes of World of Warcraft, Everquest, and Dark Age of Camelot were mainstays. For many of us, Diablo III was the first new breath of fresh air that presented new IPs and mechanics: ruthless intelligent AI, persistent progression through the story-based universe, and dozens upon dozens of highly detailed dungeons. And for all of us, doing all of this while earning enough gold to buy your first sword was incredibly satisfying.

As for the future of gaming, if the entire industry hasn’t quite realized it yet, there is a revolution coming — or perhaps another revolution would be more appropriate. The revolution that I am referring to is MMOs that are centered on the loot-based economy of Diablo III, and this revolution is preparing to descend on you this year in the form of the sequel, Elden Ring.

Simply put, the Elden Ring is a fantasy action RPG that is a spiritual successor to Diablo III with a stronger focus on combat. This means loot, gathering, and dungeons, all of which are deliciously addictive without the high-pressure tension and tank-and-spank controls that accompany them in Diablo. The Elden Ring is much more accessible in regards to its difficulty curve, especially in regard to new players, and places far less emphasis on real-money transactions for upgrades, instead relying on gathering and the buying of equipment. And even if you aren’t the type of gamer that plays MMOs for long hours each day, the real-time nature of the game, coupled with asynchronous chat and in-game chat, has lead to a multiplayer discussion environment that is nearly unparalleled in the MMO community.
