Of course you want to spend your time writing software for that system. The tool that makes it easier is the software that makes the system possible.
Most of the software development companies at the top of the list of software companies are hiring people that have an in-depth knowledge of at least one system. The larger and more diverse the organization, the greater the odds that someone will be able to quickly put together the solution to a problem. This is the minimum skill set necessary to operate at this level. It is also the skill set that the smartest developers have mastered.
Once upon a time, software development was something that only a very few people did. The only reason these people were able to write software was because they had very high levels of software and systems knowledge. That’s why you didn’t see software development jobs listed as “tech” jobs, but instead as “computer science” jobs. If you were good enough to code, you’d be a computer scientist. You’d be someone that could understand the nitty-gritty details of how a computer works and use that knowledge to write software.
