Timelines are used to organise your material. If you have an audio CD with 4 tracks of music on it, the first track is on the first timeline, the second track on the second, the third on the third timeline and the fourth on the fourth. Each timeline has a number of places on it. After the main timeline and place settings are created, you can create as many place settings as you want on each timeline. Each place setting can have a specific sequence of 8 different sounds.
As a user, you will be able to organise material by adding it to timelines. When it comes to mixing, you can mix and save sections of the material in each timeline. This means that you can download a section of material and have it saved as you go back to your composing.

There isn’t a standard version of Blue outside of the University of California at Berkeley, the main developers. You could install the Blue package from that university and the Blue documentation (and of course, the Csound manuals) from here.
I will not list many of the available Blue documents, as they are all on the Blue site.

I have been using blue a little over a year now. When I first started using blue I did not need a performance application and so the timing that the audio was streamed through was not important to me. My idea was that as a music composition environment it was important to allow for a more flexible timeline. I later found csound to have enough tools and dynamics to suit my needs as I think the world of Blue.
– Blue has many uses, a simple one is for composers to create score drafts. Another nice thing about blue is that it is the result of a Java 1.4 implementation of the FTL(Fundamental Transduction Layer) project (which is a rather old one). I also know that there are people out there who use Blue and believe that it has a future. I think that it has a bright future.
– Blue has no connection to the development of Java and so it is open source.
– Blue has been in development by the brains of Larry Korn (larry.korn@sun.com) and myself (chris.cochrane@sun.com). Also, we have helped with this project to expand the features and abilities of the program.
I believe that the future of blue is wide open, it is in the hands of users and we will move it where it needs to go.

Csound was developed by Ken Shirriff, Efoutas, and myself (j.p.mccartney).
It is now in its 12th year and is still going strong, I would suggest that you check it out. The FTL guys are still around (Lk, Larry, martin, bk) if you need any help.
