Many of the significant design features introduced by AutoCAD, including most of the basic geometric shapes (such as the circle and square), were based on or influenced by the classic Bézier curve and Spline curve, which were introduced in 1972 by Donald B. Stein. The use of Bézier and Spline curves in AutoCAD originated in early 1985 and became fully functional in 1986, providing the basic geometric tools for the earliest versions of AutoCAD. The Bézier curve and Spline curve are often used to describe and manipulate parametric, geometric curves, surfaces and solids in the software.
In AutoCAD, a Bézier curve is a sequence of parametric Bézier curves connected at their control points, which are geometric locations at which a curve is connected to a previous control point or a next control point. A Bézier curve has two parameters: the location of the control points, and the parameter value, which controls the shape of the curve (the curvature of the curve in the case of a Bézier curve). The parameter value can be a real number that describes the position along the curve (such as a distance) or an imaginary number (such as a tangent), which controls the shape of the curve (such as whether the curve is convex or concave).
The Bézier curve is a central curve in the development of AutoCAD. From it, the developer of AutoCAD derived the parametric curve (which is not a Bézier curve), and the spline curve (which is a Bézier curve). AutoCAD’s Bézier curve and Spline curve are similar to (and sometimes the same as) the rational Bézier curve, rational B-spline curve and general Bézier curve. Some other CAD programs, such as SolidWorks, follow the concept of a parametric curve, but are not designed to implement parametric curves using Bézier curves.
AutoCAD does not support functions for vector graphics, but functions for raster graphics, which are basically simple image editing tools. For example, the position of a wall is not known exactly and is often entered using measured distances. As further modeling is done, additional information about the object must be updated.
During the process of converting model elements from 2D to 3D, 3D operations are applied to the object:

Modeling geometry is accomplished with a variety of geometric operations. These include:
Boolean operations such as intersection, union and difference
Polygon operations such as point, line and arc
Surface operations such as planar, surface and solid

Textured operations such as texture mapping, texturing using polygons, complex textures, texturing using creases, bump mapping, specular maps
Tracing, editing and creating of 3D objects may also be done using applications such as Maya or Rhinoceros.

A linear plot shows the intersection between a plane and the surface of an object. The plane is generated by a set of X, Y and Z control points. A plane can be described by a set of control points.

Extracting feature data
Feature extraction is the process of generating a model from a set of drawings. A feature is a component of the model that is made up of polygonal or polyline geometry. Feature extraction can be performed in a number of ways, for example:
From a single 2D drawing
From a number of 2D drawings (multi-view)
From an existing 2D model
The 2D model from which a 3D model is created is known as the foundation.
Extracting data from the foundation to create a 3D model is called model conversion.
Loading a foundation into a 3D environment
After a model is generated, it is loaded into the model space environment for editing. The same model may be loaded repeatedly into a 3D environment.
